The Amtrak station in Ashland consists of a platform with a shelter adjacent to the historic depot seen in this image. The rails run in a grassy median between two central streets, which are lined with beautiful shade trees, a colorful variety of Colonial Revival and Queen Anne homes, and buildings on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. Designed by W.P. Lee and completed in 1923, the brick depot stands 1 ½ stories high under a gabled slate roof. Inside, the Ashland Visitors Center maintains a small museum in one of the former waiting rooms. Ashland is famous for its Strawberry Faire held each June during the height of the local strawberry season. The festivities include musical concerts and performances, food, craft vendors, a children’s pageant, and of course, strawberries. Photographer: Chuck Gomez for Amtrak.
