Boarding the "Peanut Special" at Plains, Ga.

The "Peanut Special" was an Amtrak charter train that carried supporters of president-elect Jimmy Carter from Plains, Ga., to Washington, D.C., for his 1977 inauguration; it was organized by campaign aide Maxine Reese. For the journey to the capital, passengers boarded at the old Plains depot, which had served as Carter's national campaign headquarters. Menus from the train trip, featuring southern favorites, are also included in the Amtrak Archives.
