California Zephyr in the Front Range, 1990s.

Color photograph showing the westbound California Zephyr moving through eastern Colorado; image likely dates to the 1990s.

California Zephyr in the Front Range, 1990s.

Here, the westbound California Zephyr is led by P-42 locomotive No. 73 as it moves across the Front Range just outside of Denver on its way to Emeryville, Calif. The mountain range, which is located in Colorado and Wyoming, earned its name due to the fact that it is the first chain of the Rockies that a traveler encounters moving west from the Great Plains. Notable peaks include Mount Evans and Pike’s Peak.
