Responding to feedback from passengers, cycling advocates and communities along its routes, Amtrak in 2015 increased the number of trains that offer walk-up/walk-on bike service to also include the Capitol Limited, Carolinian, Heartland Flyer, Crescent and Silver Service trains. Above, recreational cyclists walk their bicycles to a Superliner car whose interior was retrofitted with bicycle carriers.

Historic Harpers Ferry, W.Va., is located where West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland meet. It is a popular destination for those enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and rafting on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Bikers and hikers can take advantage of access to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park, whose pathway to the south leads to the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
