This button features a stylized sprig of pine in a nod to the state tree of North Carolina. Through the financial support of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the current version of the Carolinian launched with an inaugural run on May 11, 1990. Although the train ran between Charlotte and New York, it was paired with the Palmetto (New York-Jacksonville, Fla.) between Rocky Mount, N.C. and New York City. In 1991, the Carolinian began traveling the entire New York-Charlotte route as a separate train. From the Ann Owens Collection.
