One last look, 2015.

An assistant conductor pokes his head from the door of a coach as the northbound Vermonter departs Hartford, Conn. The conductor and assistant conductor are responsible for the safe movement and operation of the train, the collection and protection of Amtrak ticket revenue, the conduct of the operating and on-board service crews, the boarding and detraining of passengers and the assignment of passenger accommodations.

The Amfleet coaches shown in this image were manufactured as part of an order Amtrak placed in 1974 with the Budd Company for 492 single-level cars in various configurations. Based on the design of the popular Metroliner cars, they feature tubular bodies and ridged stainless steel fluting and can reach speeds of up to 125 mph.

The Vermonter is financed primarily through funds made available by the Vermont Agency of Transportation, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
