Early in the morning, passengers stand in the rain as a northbound Northeast Regional slows to a stop at Ashland, Virginia. The rails run in a grassy median between two central streets, which are lined with beautiful shade trees, a colorful variety of Colonial Revival and Queen Anne homes, and buildings on the campus of Randolph-Macon College.
Across the tracks is the picturesque brick depot designed by W.P. Lee and completed in 1923. Inside, the Ashland Visitors Center maintains a small museum in one of the former waiting rooms.
Ashland is famous for its Strawberry Faire held each June during the height of the local strawberry season. The festivities include musical concerts and performances, food, craft vendors, a children’s pageant, and of course, strawberries.
