Amtrak wall calendar, 1988.

Since 1974, Amtrak has been involved with the publication of an annual wall calendar that generally features a name train, new equipment or important pieces of rail infrastructure—and sometimes all three. The upper third of the calendar has featured artwork by noted railroad artists such as Gil Reid, Ted Rose and J. Craig Thorpe in mediums including watercolor, oil-on-canvas and photography.

Louisiana’s bayou country has long captured the imagination of travelers, writers and artists, its watery surfaces reflecting the intense southern sun and ever-changing sky—and in this case, the Sunset Limited. Numerous bridges and trestles carry the tracks through wetlands and swamps. The Sunset Limited is the oldest named train in the United States still in operation, having held the name since its inauguration in 1894. It was the Southern Pacific's premier train, built for luxury first-class long-distance travel.

Artist: Gil Reid (American, 1918-2007) for Amtrak.
