An official ribbon-cutting for the BWI Rail Station was held on Thursday, October 23—a “cool but sunshiny day”—before a crowd of approximately 400 persons representing the federal, state and local governments, Amtrak and the airlines. The local Severna Park High School Band serenaded guests with musical selections, followed by the dedication at five minutes past noon.

Among the speakers was Senator Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. of Maryland, who noted, “This [station] is an excellent example of cooperation between the federal and state governments and local agencies in pursuit of an energy-efficient method for moving people.” Following the speeches and good wishes, the crowd enjoyed refreshments provided by the airlines. Attendees could tour the modern cast-concrete depot and then board a bus to see the new airport terminal.

In this image, the station staff poses for a photo during the dedication ceremony (l-r): Laurie Reese, ticket clerk; Paula Frankos, lead ticket clerk; Pat Magliano, supervisor, ticketing; and Sandi Mills, ticket clerk.
