Connecticut Valley Service train at Hartford, 1980s.

In 1980, the Budd Company built thirteen Self-Propelled Vehicle (SPV-2000) diesel cars for the state of Connecticut at a cost of about $1 million per unit. Although owned by the state, the cars were used by Amtrak on the Connecticut Valley Service. In this image, the two cars wear the Amtrak Phase III paint scheme introduced in 1979. The SPV-2000s, which each accommodated 85 passengers, could operate under their own power as single units or be combined for greater capacity; they could also be pulled by a locomotive in an Amfleet consist for added versatility.

The train is skirting the edge of Bushnell Park, located immediately south of historic Hartford Union Station.
