Downeaster at the Dover station, 2016.

The inauguration of the Downeaster on December 15, 2001 was the result of two decades of work by passenger rail advocates; the service was the first to operate between Maine and Boston since 1965. The Downeaster is financed primarily through funds made available by the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which was created in 1995 by the Maine legislature to develop and provide passenger rail service between Maine and Boston and points within Maine.

The Dover station is located north of the Cochecho River and a few blocks west of Central Avenue, one of the principle thoroughfares connecting the north and south sides of the city. The building parcel for the new station was donated by local developer and train enthusiast Joseph Sawtelle, who was part of a team that oversaw the rehabilitation and reuse of downtown Dover’s famous mill complex. In addition to a depot inspired by the stations of the Victorian era, there is also the outdoor waiting area seen above.
