Through the financial assistance of the state of Alabama, the Gulf Breeze launched with an inaugural run for invited guests on October 27, 1989. Between Birmingham and New York, through service was provided via the Crescent (New York-Atlanta-New Orleans). This complimentary ticket was good for a ride in coach. The Gulf Breeze initially served the Alabama communities of Birmingham, Montgomery, Greenville, Evergreen, Atmore and Mobile; stops were later added at Brewton and Bay Minette. The inaugural run included festivities in each town, and the city of Mobile held a reception for passengers at Fort Conde. The train was discontinued in early 1995 and replaced with Thruway Bus service connecting to the Crescent. From the Todd Stennis Collection.
