Sunset Limited crossing the Mississippi River, 1970s.

<i>Sunset Limited</i> crossing the Mississippi River, 1970s.

Opened in 1935, the Huey P. Long Bridge, located in Jefferson Parish, was the first in the region to provide passage for both automobiles and trains. To this day, it remains one of the longest railroad bridges in the United States. The train consists of single-level cars purchased from the predecessor railroads, as new bi-level Superliner cars would not be in use on the route until early 1981.
