This film slide, part of a set commissioned by Amtrak Marketing, shows the Sunset Limited near Lake Saint Catherine in Eastern New Orleans. The area, known for its freshwater and brackish marshes and coastal hardwood forests, attracts migratory birds. To the west of the lake is the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, and to the north is famous Lake Pontchartrain. The bi-level Superliner cars in this image wear the Phase IV livery introduced in 1993.
In 1995, this route ran between Los Angeles and Miami via New Orleans; service east of New Orleans was suspended following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
