WE'VE COME A LONG WAY - Amtrak has progressed from the early days of manually-operated carousel-style reservation control boards to today's sophisticated computerized systems.
Above: San Francisco Reservation Center in 1973.
Below: Amtrak's Automatic Reservation and Ticketing System (ARTS) was fully implemented across the nation on June 27, 1974. ARTS achieved a major milestone when it issued more than 1 million tickets in August 1978.
