Train attendant assisting customers at Jackson, Miss., 2016.
The City of New Orleans follows a 926-mile route that links three of the most important music capitals in America: Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. The Superliner-equipped train passes through unique and historic regions including Illinois central farmlands, the western corner of Kentucky, the forests of Tennessee and Mississippi and the famous bayous of Louisiana. Train attendants, such as Michel-Antoine Nicolas, shown above on the City of New Orleans, help passengers board and alight, direct them to their coach seats, assist with baggage, clean the car and answer questions about meal choices, passing local landmarks and the train's progress. The Jackson station and connecting freight house were built by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1927 after the railroad was elevated through downtown. In 2003 the city acquired the Georgian Revival building and completed a $20 million renovation. Amtrak was relocated to the former freight house, and the old passenger waiting room and ticket counter were converted into commercial office space. Photographer: Chuck Gomez for Amtrak.
