On the first day of Amtrak operations, U.S. Secretary of Transportation John Volpe (l), Amtrak President Roger Lewis (c) and Amtrak Board of Incorporation Chairman David W. Kendall (r) stand in front of the Amtrak route map. Kendall, former vice president of legal affairs for Chrysler Corporation, was one of eight members of the Amtrak Board of Incorporation. They were named by President Richard Nixon on December 18, 1970.
