The rollout of modern, stainless steel Amfleet equipment in 1975 set a new precedent for comfort and convenience.
Turboliner RTL 1970s
Based on a French design, the Turboliners were unlike any train Americans had seen. Along with the introduction of Amfleet and Superliner equipment, they emphasized Amtrak’s efforts to modernize its fleet for a new generation of travelers.
National Operations Center
Before the days of GPSs, Amtrak tracked trains by hand at the National Operations Center in L'Enfant Plaza, Washington, D.C., in the mid 1970s.
Beech Grove Shops
At Amtrak’s Beech Grove Shops, skilled employees repair and maintain locomotives and cars for use across the system. They follow in a long line of railroaders who have kept the maintenance facility humming for more than 100 years.
