"Amtrak Salutes the Military" poster, 1980s.

"Amtrak Salutes the Military" multicolor printed poster; dates to the early 1980s.

"Amtrak Salutes the Military" poster, 1980s.

This poster was made to promote special fare discounts for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The F40PH locomotive, wearing the Phase II paint scheme introduced in 1975, holds its right hand in salute to American troops. Amtrak has long offered a discount on rail fares to active-duty U.S. military personnel, their spouses and their dependents. In the lower left hand corner is the phrase "America's Getting Into Training," the catch line for an advertising campaign launched in 1980.

Artist: Jeanne Turner for Amtrak.
