Attendant in red jacket, 1977.

In this image, on-board service employee Jeff Schueler wears an attendant's red double-breasted jacket. In early 1972, Amtrak introduced new uniforms created by fashion designer Bill Atkinson. According to an article in the February 1972 issue of Penn Central Post (the Penn Central company magazine), "The new uniforms proposed for America's intercity rail network made their official debut at a fashion show in Pennsylvania Station, New York...[Amtrak] wanted [the uniforms] to be modern in spirit but yet to retain the colorful traditions of American railroading. 'Nostalgic newness' was the theme. Atkinson cleverly added in a reference to the company's logo (seen above Schueler) through the use of the chevron motif on the jacket cuffs. When on duty, Schueler would also have worn a black bow tie.

In 1978, new uniforms were introduced for on-board service employees; for men, this meant trading out the double-breasted jacket in favor of a longer, single-breasted style that was considered more comfortable.
