The daily Pennsylvanian covers a 444-mile route that passes through the Appalachian Mountains and Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The train is financed primarily through funds made available by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

P-42 diesel-electric locomotive No. 145 leads the train, wearing the vintage Amtrak Phase III paint scheme used from 1979 until 1993. This locomotive and three others were repainted in historic paint schemes as part of the Amtrak 40th Anniversary celebration in 2011-2012. No. 145 pulls tubular Amfleet I cars, which began entering service in 1975.

Horseshoe Curve, located a few miles west of Altoona, Pa., was completed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1854. Construction of the 2,375 foot long curve necessitated the blasting of a hillside and filling of two ravines. Considered a 19th century engineering marvel, Horseshoe Curve is designated a National Historic Landmark.
