In this image, Signal Maintainer David Dinaro, assisted by Bryan Maffa and Edward Morrell, replaces the cover to a switch he has just fixed north of Washington Union Station. A switch allows a train to cross from one track to another, and large stations such as Washington often contain dozens of switches as a handful of mainline tracks multiply to serve numerous platforms.
