The daily Black Hawk began operations on February 14, 1974 and initially used self-propelled Budd rail diesel cars. Two years later, the route was equipped with diesel locomotives and new single-level Amfleet cars. Deteriorating track conditions and heavy freight traffic on the route resulted in a poor on-time performance. Thus, the state of Illinois, which had been covering half of the train's operating deficit, decided to end its support in 1981; service was discontinued that September.
