This film slide, part of a set commissioned by Amtrak Marketing, shows the Sunset Limited crossing the Mississippi River on the Huey P. Long Bridge west of New Orleans. Opened in 1935, the bridge, located in Jefferson Parish, was the first in the region to provide passage for both automobiles and trains. To this day, it remains one of the longest railroad bridges in the United States. The locomotives in this image wear the Phase III livery introduced in 1979.
In 1995, this route ran between Los Angeles and Miami via New Orleans; service east of New Orleans was suspended following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
