In late 1973, Amtrak ordered the first of an eventual 492 single-level cars, known as Amfleet I, that were based on the design of the popular Metroliner. With tubular bodies and ridged stainless steel fluting, they could reach speeds of up to 125 mph. The Amfleet cars came in five configurations, including the Amcafe shown in this photo. Weighing in at 110,000 pounds, the Amcafes included a food service counter in the center of the car, with seating for 56 passengers occupying the two ends.
According to the poster on the wall, travelers could buy a Trakpac that included fresh fruit, assorted cheeses, raisins, wafers and other goodies for only $1.75; a soda cost $0.50.
