To coincide with the company's refreshed branding in 2000, Amtrak introduced new uniforms in a color palette of gray, silver and blue. Ultimately, Onboard and Station Services employees determined that the older navy blue gabardine used since the 1980s had been more comfortable and better retained its shape; thus, by 2006 uniforms returned to the traditional navy blue fabric.
An article in Amtrak Ink, the employee magazine, highlighted one new feature of all uniforms: “epaulet slides, which are color-coded to reflect the job function of the employee.” Inspired by military uniforms, the epaulets were only worn on short sleeved shirts, as long sleeved shirts were generally paired with a navy blue jacket, vest or sweater, depending on the job position. Conductors wore epaulets with the light blue Amtrak logo on a gold background while those of an assistant conductor featured the logo against a dark blue background. The epaulets of Onboard and Station Services personnel had a white logo on blue, baggage handlers a red logo on blue and the Red Caps a blue logo on red.
