In May 2014, Amtrak and the Illinois Department of Transportation teamed up for a six-month pilot program in which travelers were allowed to bring their small cat or dog on the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg between Chicago and Quincy. The pilot was later expanded to the Illini and Saluki and served as a model for other routes across the Amtrak system.
By 2016, the successful Pets on Trains program grew to include most long-distance and state-supported trains, allowing customers to travel with their pet in a carrier for trips of up to seven hours.
