In 1982 and 1983, the NBC comedy program Real People chartered special Amtrak trains; one traveled between Chicago and Washington, D.C. and the other between Chicago and Boston. At stops along the way, the cast taped segments with interesting “everyday” people who had unique talents and jobs. Footage from the journeys was used to kick off the fall seasons. According to the fiscal year 1983 Amtrak Annual Report, “approximately 40 million viewers saw the cast and crew…enjoying train travel on national television.”
