In 1980, Amtrak introduced Superliner I, the first new long distance cars in two decades, on four routes: Empire Builder, San Francisco Zephyr, Desert Wind and Southwest Limited.
The Superliner II cars were built by Bombardier in Barre, Vermont, and delivered in 1994. Both the Capitol Limited and the Auto Train began using Superliner II cars in the mid 1990s.
