These pins were developed by Amtrak to mark employees' five and ten year anniversaries. Amtrak distributed the first five-year service awards in 1977 to approximately 250 people. Intended as lapel pins, they also came with small chains so men could use them as tie tacks. Made of antique gold, they feature the first Amtrak service mark. One ruby denotes five years; thus two rubies denotes ten years of service.
